An honest question...

I truly do not understand the need for delegates (and the electoral college, for that matter) in our democratic process. It seems to me that they both undermine the democratic process. Why vote when others are going to do it for you?

I really honestly want to know why they are necessary. Am I missing something here? Isn't an individual vote count enough? Why don't we trust American citizens to make decisions all by themselves?

I don't see the need for them anymore - however, back when the country started, it made sense. Each township would hold their votes. Then the majority winner in that particular township would send a delegate, who usually had to go by horseback, to the state level to submit those votes. That way, it was felt the most reasonable voting procedure was handed down, as per the technology (or lack thereof) at the time. But now, it's a joke, totally unnecessary, yet as shown by the underhanddedness of the Repug party, they can take advantage of that system.

It needs to be changed and it would take a brave Congress to do it.
